Staithes Museum Newsletter July 2024

Writer's picture: RosieRosie

I'm writing to send you the newsletter for July. This month, we’ve made significant strides in various projects and received generous community support. You can find it here:

The newsletter has expanded this month, with all the suggestions I've received from the trustees and volunteers. If you get the chance, please let me know what you think about the (long) length, and which articles you enjoyed, and I'll use your feedback while I'm putting together next month's newsletter. Here's a summary of what's in this month's edition:

  • Digital Projects: Join us for the launch of "What the Sea Saw" film at the Staithes festival, featuring local fishing heritage and photos from our museum!

  • Generous Donation: The Irish Coalminers raised £180 for a new touchscreen display during their performance at Dotty’s Tearoom.

  • New Exhibit: Discover the story behind the unusual bricks from the SS Princesse Clementine shipwreck in our latest exhibit.

  • Remote Volunteer Opportunities: Help us transcribe a newly digitized 19th-century diary.

  • Feature Article: Read about Staithes Museum in the Whitby Foghorn Magazine.

  • Educational Initiatives: New quizzes and activities for visitors, including a non-reader quiz and educational games.

  • Visitor Survey: Insights from our recent visitor survey reveal diverse visitor origins and preferences.

  • Accessibility Improvements: Subtitles added to John Cole’s lobster pot video.

  • Object Highlight: Meet Johnny Hawksbill, our taxidermied sea turtle.

  • Pest of the Month: Learn about woodworm and how to spot it.

Thank you for all your ideas, support and enthusiasm!
